The Mercury-Laden Fish Floated for School Lunches

Dog fish, an abundant but seldom used fish, has been proposed for use in school lunches, prisons

and other federal food programs. Whereas the program would help beleaguered fishermen in the

Northeast, toxicology tests on the fish reveal a high level of methylmercury, the form of mercury

that can cause mental retardation, seizures, vision and hearing loss, delayed development, language

disorders and memory loss in children.
