As the amount of food imports into the US soars, so does the threat of illness from that food.
Underfunded and understaffed, the US Food and Drug Administration, the agency charged with policing
the safety of these imports, can’t keep up. According to an analysis of FDA data, the agency today
rejects about the same number of shipments of foreign food as it did a decade ago – when imports were
less than half the current level.
