FIND A LEAD SAFE CONTRACTOR IN YOUR AREA IKE often receives calls from homeowners or tenants looking for contractors who have been trained in Lead Safe Work Practices or who are EPA Certified Lead Renovators. That's a good thing, because it means that there is increasing awareness of the risk that lead hazards will be created during renovation activities. The more customers ask prospective contractors whether they have the training, the more contractors will realize that it is good for business to be knowledgeable about working with lead paint and to have these skills. However, even though there are firms that have taken training, there is no centralized database of renovators or contractors who have been trained in Lead Safe Work Practices. This can be very challenging for homeowners or tenants wanting to find a company who will work knowledgably and safely. On April 22, 2010, a new federal rule went into effect, requiring contractors working in homes with lead-based paint to follow certain guidelines, avoid certain dangerous practices, and have some level of training. You can search for firms who have obtained EPA certification at this link: http://cfpub.epa.gov/flpp/searchrrp_firm.htm However, that link won't tell you which employees at the firm have received training. Ask to see the photo ID that will demonstrate that the supervisor on your job is an EPA Certified Lead Renovator. Below, you will find a list of Indiana contractors, organized by region, who have taken U.S. HUD's Lead Safe Work Practices training. Only firms or individuals who have taken training from a provider approved by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will be listed. We have contacted each of these firms to get their permission to list them. If you are a contractor and wish to be listed, please contact IKE at jperras@ikecoalition.org. If you are looking to hire a contractor, remodeler or renovator, please make sure to ask whether the people who will actually be doing the work in your home have taken the training themselves or will be closely supervised by someone who has. And, just because a firm's staff have trained doesn't mean they will actually use safe work practices--make sure to ask them specifically. Any questions, contact IKE at jperras@ikecoalition.org or 317-677-4760.
